Why The Atlanta Classic Crown Royal Event Has a Different Structure This Year

On Friday September 26th, 2008, I had the “aha” moment for the Young Alumni Movement. It was on the date that over 1,000 of my fellow young alums attended (or tried to) the Crown Royal Affair on the rooftop of the Chamber of Commerce in Atlanta during the Atlanta Football Classic Weekend. The energy during the night was amazing, and the event set the tone for the rest of the weekend.

Fast forward one year, and we’ve upped the stakes. This year, the Crown Royal event during the Atlanta Football Classic Weekend has a social cause component – we’re using the event to generate funds for the Florida A&M university National Alumni Association. Last year, the event was for only 300 people, but this year we are bringing together 400 young alumni who are serious about making a difference for FAMU (okay, we’re serious about partying hard too).

And therein lies the problem. When you combine the costs for enough Crown Royal, venue space, security, bartenders, etc for 400 people with increased demand (we expect over 2,000 people would attend this year) and a recession (in case you haven’t noticed), the total event costs skyrocket.

So, as a I learned in Dr. Wilson’s Market Theory class, when demand severely outpaces supply, you have to raise the price (last year the price was $0, so it’s not the price will be earth-shattering).

After intense debate, here are the three totally cool ways you can contribute to the Atlanta Classic Crown Royal event and show that you are serious about helping the university (and having tons of fun) moving forward:

Be on the Young Alumni Host Committee: Each member of the Host Committee is asked to donate $100 (tax deductible and this grants you VIP Admission for you and a guest). Have your business endorse the event ($150): You’ll get the following:
