There are certain moments that change your life forever. Let’s call them “pivots.” If you’re blessed/lucky, you have the opportunity to control these moments (think about a fork in the road). However, more often than not, our pivots result from outside forces. Essentially, they just “happen” to us (destiny?).
I can trace one of my pivots back to one person: Nikki Foster…and she is celebrating her birthday this Friday at Halo.
If you think I’m a cool guy. have positively impacted your life in any way, think I’m weird, do me a solid and help Nikki party in style. RSVP at nikkirsvp@gmail.com for complimentary admission.
:: The Story ::
While on internship with BET in New York, Nikki helped a local promoter manage his guest list at a weekly party at Babalu (I think). In October 2003, the promoter needed a more efficient method to collect RSVPs, and Nikki referred me to him for a Columbus Day Weekend series of events in Miami.
Flashback: In October 2003, I was a recent MBA graduate who decided to mortgage my future, and pursue entrepreneurship full-time in Tallahassee, FL. To save money, I moved into my fraternity’s house in August 2003.
Though, we were a little too late to become involved in this project, the promoter explained he was part of team who were promoting travel package and 3 day series of parties with Allen Iverson in Los Angeles for the 2004 All-Star Weekend. At this time, Allen Iverson was the biggest draw for urban parties, and this was the first All-Star Weekend in LA in quite some time. These promoters had it all: a huge base of followers from NYC, the hottest basketball player in the world, and official sponsorship from Hot 97 in NYC.
What they didn’t have was a website. And DIGITALGUESTLIST became their de facto online home base.
They began to direct all of the promotion to the site. Hot 97’s website linked directly to us as the official party series for All-Star Weekend, and the likes of Angie Martinez and Funkmaster Flex announced “go to digitalguestlist.com for more info” several times on-air for a two week period (remember, this is NYC, and at time where people actually listened to the radio). Needless to say, our servers crashed times from the traffic.
During the early part of 2004, we went from a site that advertised parties in Tallahassee to a national mailing list with 25,000 hardcore party people from around the nation.
So, without Nikki Foster, there probably would not be a Joey Digital (for better or worse).
