Thanks to a referral from Lafoy Grant, DIGITALGUESTLIST CTO Justin Dawkins and I will be teaching middle and high school students from the non-profit Youth On The Move how to build and maintain the organization’s website. Over the course of 4 weeks, we’ll meet with the kids for an hour on Wednesdays to discuss site basics, user interface/experience design, SEO, business model theory, and customer development.
I’m excited about impacting these kids, and what looks like a great organization. But I’m even more excited for the chance to improve my skill set in a specific area. See I have a huge problem (well several huge problems) with making things too complex. I may touch on the underlying reasons for this later, but complex thinking is a hindrance when you’re dealing with startups/new ideas. Breaking down concepts for these kids should force me to simplify my thought process.
I’ll keep you posted on how the class is progressing through this blog. We start tomorrow (Wednesday 6/18).
