I’ve been debating whether to say this publicly or not for the last 12 hours, but something happened for the first time at Founders Therapy last night that I didn’t like.
The conversation turned to “this is what’s wrong with the black community.”
Quick background info on Founders Therapy. It is like Alcoholics Anonymous for Entrepreneurs…except we drink. We get personal frustrations off our chest, usually centered around a specific subject, in a group of people like ourselves (usually going through/have gone through something similar). And people usually come out feeling a little bit better (and even crying).
Now sf35 isn’t specifically for black people although black people are pretty much the only ones in the group. Confusing, I know. But I never wanted the discussion to focus on race.
Why? Because I think its effin’ pointless.
Why do I think its effin’ pointless? 1) the “problem with black people” has so many variables and dimensions, that I’m not sure the supercomputer that beat the chess master could solve it, and 2) I like to talk action. Traction. Whatever you want to call it.
AKA “this is what we’re doing to solve a string of the equation.”
Anything else is a waste of time and is delaying the inevitable. And indirectly contributing to “the” problem. This recent article on The Root explains it better.
I failed as the session moderator. Though I tried to get the discussion back on track, it kept going back to the same thing. So I let it. And I let some people down (aka wasted their time).
We’re taking steps to correct this moving forward. But in the meantime, we’re focused on chipping away at our string of the equation.
